Midway through the second round of the NHL postseason, what are some trends to take advantage of in your betslips?
We are three games into each second round series of the 2023 NHL postseason and it’s safe to say that things are not going the way anyone expected.
In a round that has been so far full of surprises, expect anything! When the dust settles just four teams will remain in the hunt for Lord Stanley’s trophy, so look for all eight contending squads to give it a real run and take these series deep.
All four series underdogs currently hold leads and are looking to pull off the improbable. This may be the year of the dog, but here are some other betting trends to look at from these series so far.

Under Trending in Toronto-Florida Series
To the surprise of hockey fans everywhere (except in the Sunshine State) the Florida Panthers have dominated this series against the Toronto Maple Leafs.
They have played tremendous defense, holding a prolific Toronto offense to just two goals in the first three games. As underdogs in each game, Florida’s +1.5 spread is undefeated and looks to continue that way as each game has been low-scoring and close.
Even if they drop a game or two, Florida’s defense should allow them to cover the spread. That same defense should also continue to keep these games going under. Game 1 just barely went over by a half goal, but the next two games both went under and this seems to fit the tone of this series.
Carolina-New Jersey Blowing out Over
The series between the Carolina Hurricanes and New Jersey Devils has been an absolute free-for-all in terms of putting the puck in the back of the net. There have been six, seven and 12 goals respectively in the three games thus far, each going over the pregame line.
With so many goals there have been large margins of defeat as well, with Carolina winning the first two games by four and five goals, respectively, and New Jersey taking Game 3 by four goals.
These are two red-hot offenses and it’s a safe bet that the Over trend will continue. Whichever team you feel confident about in this series, take them to win by a goal and a half along with the game going Over.

Dallas-Seattle Continue Barrage of Goals
Similar to the Carolina-New Jersey series, the series between the Dallas Stars and the Seattle Kraken has seen a flurry of goals in each game.
Seattle has gotten their two wins by scores of 5-4 and 7-2, while Dallas’ win came via a 4-2 score.
These are two very active offenses firing on all cylinders at the moment and this should continue into the second half of the series. All three games (and especially in Seattle wins) have gone over the pregame line, a trend worth doubling down on for the remainder of this second round series.
Vegas Trading Scoring Blows with Edmonton
The Vegas Golden Knights and Edmonton Oilers series has been a back-and-forth contest, but one filled with blowout victories. These teams are trading knockout blows each game, not just strategic jabs. Vegas took Game 1, 6-4, Edmonton bounced back with a 5-1 victory, and Vegas jumped back ahead in Game 3 with a 5-1 win.
These games seem like a race for one offense to take a commanding lead, at which point the outcome of the game feels decided. That commanding lead has served as a point of no return and at that pace, the blowouts may just continue coming. As a result of these highly one-sided score lines, the games have all gone Over as well.
Whichever team you’re backing in this matchup, the Over seems to be the winning trend.
