- Here’s an interesting way to approach the over-under baseball menu. The Cincinnati Reds are under .500, but, after last weekend, had scored 42 more runs than they had given up. Translation? They lose high-scoring games. Check that out.
- By the way, the Reds look injected with energy from the deadline trade in which they got Trevor Bauer. The move wasn’t for this year, but they caught some fire. The team has crept back into the wild-card picture, but if they can’t get over the top in some key upcoming games, they may fall a bit. Watch closely. This team is in the midst of 13 of 16 home games.
- The New York Mets are looking ridiculous, with a 15-2 mark in their past 17 games as of last weekend. Depending on when you read this, a leveling-off is expected. If that happens by Thursday, their anticipated dropoff may be hard to cash in on. But if they haven’t dipped, think contrarian.
- Antonio “Me-Me-Me” Brown makes negative NFL pre-season headlines, feeling unsafe about the helmet he’s supposed to wear and thus not practicing with the Oakland Raiders. I think Brown wants to avoid practice and play only in the games. This issue strangely did not come up when he was negotiating a new, fat contract with the Raiders. Bettors beware! Selfish players tear teams apart. The Raiders’ over-under season-win total number hasn’t changed much. It’s still around six. But the Brown action, or inaction, will affect how that plays out.
Week Zero. College football begins August 24 with what insiders call Week Zero, and in earnest August 29 when defending champion Clemson University faces Georgia Tech. Funny thing is that UCLA at Cincinnati, Texas State at Texas A & M and Utah at BYU are all considered “notable” season-opening games. But to a gambler, every game is notable if you have a piece of the action. So, when Colgate plays Villanova and Samford hosts Youngstown State August 24, do you care? OF COURSE you do. This is Week Zero, baby! Good luck.
