The offseason has been busy after some big signings have taken place across MLB. The Boston Red Sox got a couple of former Dodgers with relief pitcher Kenley Jansen and third baseman Justin Turner. The New York Mets got starting pitcher Justin Verlander.

Has this improved either of those teams so they can make a run for either the ALCS or NLCS? Maybe, but there are others that have better value. Let’s take a look at some early value plays for league-winner odds.

St. Louis Cardinals Loaded with Talent

This offseason, the talk of the town has been the New York Mets in the National League after they spent more than $800 million in free agent signings. With that much money spent, means a massive influx of talent to the team, and so their odds have now flown down boards.

Odds to Win NLCS

  • LA Dodgers +350
  • NY Mets +350
  • Atlanta Braves +500
  • San Diego Padres +500
  • Philadelphia Phillies +700
  • Louis Cardinals +1200

The Mets are the co-favorites to win the NL Pennant at +350, so there really isn’t any value there with them. However, what this has done is make some teams gain value, and that’s where we come in to swoop down and grab it.

One of those teams is the St. Louis Cardinals, who are now sitting at most sportsbooks around +1200. I personally think there is value here at that number. Obviously, Paul Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado are huge bats in their lineup that deliver a massive 1-2 punch, but it’s the other players around them that intrigue me the most. The continued development of Nolan Gorman, Dylan Carlson, Tyler O’Neill, Tommy Edman, Brendan Donovan, and Juan Yepez will give the club bats up and down the lineup who can hit. I think several of them have all-star potential, and with the possible addition of prospect Jordan Walker incoming, there is serious potential here.

Not only that but who else in the NL Central is really competing with them this season? The Chicago Cubs are probably a year or two away, and the Milwaukee Brewers aren’t doing anything. Let’s not even mention the Cincinnati Reds or Pittsburgh Pirates. The path to the playoffs is clear.

New Manager, New Hope for White Sox

I know what you are thinking, and I already agree. The Chicago White Sox are an unserious organization that has become a complete joke since they decided that Tony La Russa would make a good manager.

They have since rectified their mistake (not firing him, but he left due to “health reasons”), and now they will look to rebound with a new manager at the helm. Pedro Grifol will have his hands full, but they will be full of ultra-talented players that have the potential to be superstars. It’s unlocking that ability that will be the true challenge, something that 78-year-old La Russa couldn’t do.

Odds to Win ALCS

  • Houston Astros +250
  • NY Yankees +325
  • Toronto Blue Jays +550
  • Seattle Mariners +850
  • Tampa Bay Rays +1100
  • Chicago White Sox +1500

The pieces are all there. Tim Anderson, Yoan Moncada, Luis Robert, Eloy Jimenez, Yasmani Grandal, Andrew Vaughn, and now Andrew Benintendi. We saw a number of those players take huge steps backward in their development after making strides in the 2020 and 2021 seasons. If they can find that magic again with a fresh face managing the ballclub, and if the pitching staff can also perform up to their potential (looking at you, Lucas Giolito), then they can be a real contender in the AL. Cy Young runner-up Dylan Cease anchors the rotation, and they also added Mike Clevinger as a fifth starter.

After an almost 10-year-long rebuild, White Sox fans expected more than what they have gotten. This is a team that will be in desperation mode soon if they fail to live up to those expectations, and they know a lot is riding on their success.
