MLB MVP Stats and Odds Plus Longshot Picks: Trout and Turner

MLB is a third of the way through the season but it’s not too late to put a bet down on who you think will win the MVP in the American and National League.
The best part of baseball is watching the stars go for records, and that’s exactly what we got last season with New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge breaking Roger Maris’ home run record. That helped him easily capture the AL MVP award in 2022. Now we will look forward to 2023 and who will take home this award when the season concludes.
As mentioned previously, it was Judge who took home the AL MVP last season, even with guys like Los Angeles Angels two-way player Shohei Ohtani in the same league. Playing in all but five of the Yankees’ games, Judge paced the Majors in runs (133), homers (62), RBIs (131), on-base percentage (.425), slugging percentage (.686), OPS (1.111), OPS+ (211) and total bases (391), while earning the fourth All-Star selection and third Silver Slugger Award of his career.
While Judge got all the attention last season in the AL, St. Louis Cardinals slugger Paul Goldschmidt was quietly having a fantastic season in the NL. It was a truly remarkable year for Goldschmidt, even if all the attention was on Judge and the home run record. Goldschmidt made his first All-Star team since arriving in St. Louis in 2019. Goldschmidt led the NL in slugging percentage (.578) and OPS (.981). He finished second in RBIs (115), third in batting average (.317) and tied for fifth in home runs (35). He beat out San Diego Padres star Manny Machado for the award. Who’s your favorite to win the NL MVP in 2023.

Mike Trout
Unfortunately for Trout he plays on the same team as Ohtani. That puts him at a disadvantage to win the award. However, with how Ohtani plays, an injury isn’t out of the question. That would leave the door wide open for Trout here at a large number. His odds continue to improve considerably, as they should for him to get the recognition he deserves here.

Shohei Ohtani
If Ohtani doesn’t get injured, there is no question that Ohtani will win this award. He’s the most talented player in baseball, and as such, should be the massive favorite. His odds have pulled even further ahead of this pack and there seems to be no slowing this legend down at all.

Favorite, Longshot Deserve Look for NL MVP
Trea Turner
Turner is playing well. The biggest problem is that the Philadelphia Phillies have been awful to begin the season. That can have a big impact on his ability to win the MVP. I think Philly will turn things around at some point. Turner’s odds are at +4000. They’ve gotten a little bit longer, so there’s some value here before they potentially shorten again if the Phillies heat up.
Odds Win NL MVP
- Ronald Acuna Jr. +125
- Mookie Betts +1200
- Fernando Tatis Jr. +1200
- Pete Alonso +1400
- Juan Soto +1800

Ronald Acuna Jr.
I loved Acuna coming into the 2023 season, and now you can see why. Before his injury, that has kept him out of the lineup for most of last year, this guy was the next big thing. It’s clear early on that Acuna is back to his old self, and he’s going to have a huge year in 2023 as long as he can stay healthy. And his odds have improved through the first few weeks of the season as he makes the case for himself to win this.
